This does sound like a strange question to ask, but why are we so in love with black coloured gadgets?. Everyone should know by now that we are a nation of gadget crazy lovers. Whether it’s an iPod, a mobile phone, or a netbook. We all have a small selection of gadgets that come with us everywhere we go and we can’t live without.
However, when the time comes that we have to choose a new gadget, why do we always opt for the same colour.
The question occured to me while I was reading an article about the upcoming black version of the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo have said that they expect to see a rise in sales when the black console is released. However, why would they assume that they will get a sales boost simply because they release their console in a new colour. It’s not like their competitors have made huge sales because they both have black consoles. In fact, Nintendo have sold more Wii’s than their competitor consoles, despite the Wii being a white console.
The question about gadget colour can be asked in a number of electronic markets. Just take the phone market as an example. When the iPhone was released, the black backed version sold out well before the white backed. Pretty much every phone on the market is either available in black or only comes in black, just look at the shelves.
Television are yet more gadgets where the colour question can be asked. A few years back, the main colours for TV were black and silver, hell you could even buy blue or pink if you wanted. However, now it’s almost impossible to find a TV that isn’t black.
These days, pretty much all gadgets are available in black, from digital photo frames to emergency phone chargers. It’s hard to see what the facination of black gadgets is. Although the black colour hides dirt, it does show dust more. Plus, damage to black gadgets is far more visible compared to damage on a white gadget.
For those of you who are not huge black gadget fans, for the time being, you can still get some other colours. Although this may change in the future, you can still pick up an flying lantern without it only coming in black. As for the question of why is black a popular gadget colour, I’m stumped, anyone else have a better incite?
